Four of five locals advance in CIF football playoffs

Four of five local teams that qualified for the CIF Southern Section football playoffs survived to advance to the second round.

Unbeaten and top-seeded Garden Grove (11-0) beat Bellflower 41-13 in Southern Division first round play Friday. The Argos were led by Sean Young, who passed for 130 yards and two scores, and who also ran for 134 yards and a scored.

Santiago improved to 9-2 with a 24-6 win over Costa Mesa. The Cavaliers were led by Brian Perez, who ran for 202 yards two touchdowns.

Rancho Alamitos ended its season with a 63-8 loss to Norwalk, the Southern Division’s second-ranked team. Mike Frank threw for 206 yards and the lone Vaquero score.

Westminster scored with seconds to play to defeat Irvine 20-16. The Lions (7-4) trailed 13-0 at one point, but rallied, the winning score coming on a 23-yard pass to Tarik Rayford from Robert Camacho.

In the Southwest Division, Pacifica (6-4-1) advanced to the second round with a 27-20 win over Fullerton. Mario Nava threw three touchdowns and Cody Johnson scored on a late 65-yard TD run as the Mariners held off a late rally by the Indians.
