Garden Grove Journal
To almost no one’s surprise, Garden Grove and Magnolia high schools’ basketball teams have swept to the varsity basketball titles in their leagues.
With just Wednesday’s games still unrecorded (results too late for our print deadline), the Argonaut boys had an 8-1 record in the Garden Grove League, two games ahead of Rancho Alamitos and Santiago (6-3).
In the GGL girls’ race, the Argonauts have clinched at least a tie for the title. After losing in an upset Friday to Los Amigos, Grove is 8-1, a game ahead of Rancho Alamitos.
Magnolia pulled off its double crown in the Orange League. The Sentinel girls have posted an 8-0 record, clinching at least a tie for that conference crown. Century is in second at 5-2.
Meanwhile, the boys’ team is 8-0 in the OL, leading second place Western at 5-3.
Elsewhere in the Garden Grove-Stanton-Westminster area, other teams are qualifying for the CIF playoffs. The brackets will be announced on Sunday and the games begin next week.
Pacifica’s boys team is finishing third in the Empire League (5-3 so far) behind Valencia and Cypress. In the Golden West League, Westminster is 4-5 in league and Orange 2-6, and will probably miss the playoffs.
But Western should finish second in the Orange League and advance to CIF play.
In the San Joaquin League, the Orangewood boys team has an overall 19-5 mark, but is fourth in the league.
On the girls side, Pacifica is having an off-year. The Mariners are finishing fifth in the Empire League. In the Express League, Crystal Cathedral is at the bottom of the loop.
In the Golden West League, Orange is third and Westminster fourth; the Panthers will probably make the playoffs. In the Orange League, Western is tied for fourth and out of the race.
Orangewood Academy has won the San Joaquin League with a 9-0 mark, 21-2 overall.
