Garden Grove Journal
The sound of “Playyyy balllll!” will echo across the fields and diamonds of local high schools as the high school baseball season starts on Friday.
Most local teams will be in tournament action that day, tune-ups for league play that starts in a couple of weeks.
Local teams hoping to defend championships are Pacifica (Empire League), La Quinta (Garden Grove), Orange (Golden West).
The Foothill Tournament will see Pacifica, Rancho Alamitos, Garden Grove, Santiago Orange, Westminster and Magnolia playing this weekend and next.
La Quinta and Western will be in the Newport Tournament.
Bolsa Grande won’t begin until March 12 when it visits Saddleback Valley Christian.
Most locals will start league play on March 19: the best matchup of the early season will be on March 30 when Pacifica visits a powerhouse Cypress team.
Another early contest to watch will come on March 26 when Garden Grove travels to play La Quinta. The Argos finished second to the Aztecs last season in the GGL.
Softball also starts this week. On Saturday La Quinta and Westminster will open play in the Costa Mesa Tournament at TeWinkle Park. On Tuesday, Los Amigos will visit Santa Ana in a non-league contest.
