Two employee organizations in the Garden Grove Unified School District have agreed to new contracts that provide for no raises for the 2009-2010 school year.
At the March 10 meeting, the GGUSD Board of Education approved deals with the Garden Grove Education Association (representing teachers and others) and the Garden Grove Pupil Personnel Services Association (counselors and others) calling for no wage increases for the coming year.
The agreement also provides that employees will see an increase in the amount they contribute toward their medical insurance coverage.
“The willingness of employees to accept this goes a long way toward improving our financial situation and helping to keep jobs,” said Superintendent Dr. Laura Schwalm.
The district, Orange County’s second-largest, faces some tough financial issues as the state and area wade through the severest economic downturn since the Great Depression.
Similar agreements with classified employees (janitors, bus drivers and others) and other groups are expected to come before the board at its next meeting.
The contracts approved by the board will run through the end of August 2010.
