Defending champion La Quinta won its Garden Grove League opener Friday, defeating Bolsa Grande 7-0.

Victor Guadalupe got the win, yielding seven hits but no runs. John Erhardt, Joel Johnson and Ben Vo drove in the seven runs for the Aztecs. Johnson and Jonathan Marriot each had two hits in the game.

La Quinta jumped out 4-0 in the third, scoring four runs on three hits and two Bolsa errors.

Aztec coach Mel Baty is happy with his team’s pre-season play, 4-1 before running into tough opponents Mission Viejo and Villa Park. He expects that the chief competition for La Quinta will be Garden Grove and Rancho Alamitos, who played a close game Friday won by the Argonauts (see game story this section).

Also last Friday in games involving local teams, Santiago blasted Los Amigos 5-4. In the Golden West League, Westminster fell 5-4 to Ocean View and Orange blanked Santa Ana 4-0.

On Friday, Garden Grove will visit La Quinta, with Santiago at Bolsa Grande and Rancho at Los Amigos. Westminster will visit Saddleback while Orange will be at Segerstrom and Savanna will be at Magnolia. In Empire League action will see Pacifica at Loara.

In games played this Tuesday the Aztecs improved to 2-0 with a 6-2 win over Los Amigos, while Garden Grove matched them with a 20-1 shellacking of Bolsa Grande.

In the LQ-LA game, Michael Hill broke open a tight game with a towering home run in the top of the seventh inning. Vo had four hits to lead LQ,
