Baseball, softball races come down to the wire

The collision between La Quinta and Rancho Alamitos for the 2010 Garden Grove League baseball title remained on course this week as the Aztecs survived a scare Tuesday.

La Quinta squeezed past Santiago 2-1, while Garden Grove remained a close third with a 16-2 hammering of Los Amigos and Rancho teed off on Bolsa Grande 19-0.

In girls’ softball Tuesday, Garden Grove remained on the heels of La Quinta with a 12-0 win over Bolsa Grande. The Aztecs beat Los Amigos 10-0 and Rancho thumped Santiago 10-0.

Pacifica won a key Empire League softball game, edging Kennedy 2-1 to remain unbeaten in the EL and to pick up its 20th win of the season.

Last Friday in the GGL baseball race, Garden Grove beat La Quinta 2-0 thanks to Jordan Geiger’s perfect game (see game story), while Rancho moved into a tie for first with a 17-3 win over Los Amigos. Santiago beat Bolsa Grande 12-0.

In the Golden West League, Westminster rolled to a 20-1 win over Saddleback. The Lions are in the third and seeking to nail down a playoff spot. Second place Orange bested Segerstrom 6-4.

Pacifica defeated Loara 11-3 and is tied for second in the Empire League behind first place Cypress. The Mariners hosted Cypress Wednesday (result too late for our deadline) and visit the Centurions Friday in a battle for the league lead.

In the Orange League, Western fell 3-0 to Century and Magnolia was bested 10-7 by Savanna. The Pioneers and Sentinels are fourth and fifth in the OL.

Thursday softball results in the Orange League saw Western edge Savanna 7-6. In the Empire League Pacifica beat Katella 7-1.

GGL softball play saw La Quinta defeat Bolsa Grande 13-0 and Santiago blast Los Amigos 23-2.
