Everyone wants to find a bargain; something of value for a small price. On June 8 voters in the Garden Grove Unified School District will have a chance to not only score a bargain but to also make historic improvements in local schools.
Measure A is a school improvement bond measure on the ballot for voters in the GGUSD. It’s a $250,000,000 proposition for the modernization and repair of schools in the county’s second-largest public education system.
The GGUSD has some of the oldest schools in Orange County; Garden Grove High School was founded in 1921 and has been at its present location since 1923. The former main building there is so old it even has ghost stories.
Most of the campuses are over 50 years old; few are equipped with modern plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning or up-to-date wiring and electrical capacity for today’s high-tech world.
Getting better school facilities is a good investment at any time, but thanks to the availability of state matching funds, the GGUSD can stretch its dollars much further now. If local voters don’t support Measure A, that state money will go elsewhere.
The bottom line? A typical homeowner in a single family home will see an annual increase in their property tax assessment of about $7.17 a month; that’s a little over a quarter a day.
It’s a small price to pay for better, safer and more useful schools for the children of the community. Remember, none of this money can go for teacher’s salaries or benefits; it must all go toward the physical rehabilitation and modernization of local schools.
The GGUSD has always been educationally innovative but fiscally conservative. You can be sure that your money will not be spent on frivolous or luxury items.
