La Quinta High School’s 17-year string of winning Garden Grove League baseball titles came to an end Thursday when Rancho Alamitos defeated the Aztecs 4-0.
Rancho finished the regular season with a 13-2 league record (19-4-2 overall) and grabbed the GGL pennant. La Quinta fell to 10-4 and tumbled into third place as Garden Grove defeated Santiago 7-6 and grabbed second place.
Robert Bowers pitched a three-hit shutout for Rancho and improved his record to 6-1. The Vaqs jumped off to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, keyed by Cheyne Harris’ two-run homer.
In other local baseball action Thursday, Magnolia lost 14-0 to Century in the Orange League and Anaheim felled Western 10-2.
Golden West League action saw Orange defeat Westminster 5-1 to land those teams in a tie for second place. In the Empire League, Pacifica fell 9-3 to Valencia to tie those teams for the runner-up spot.
In softball, Pacifica finished as outright champs of the Empire League by finishing a sweep of Valencia, this time winning 2-0. Krystian DeWitt threw a three-hit shutout and posted her 20th win of the season.
Orange League softball action saw Savanna whip Magnolia 11-0 and Western defeat Century 9-0.
