Sports briefs: Puga new GGHS football coach

In a gridiron version of “one and done,” Garden Grove High School’s most successful head football coach ever has stepped down and been replaced.

Joe Hay coached the Argonauts to a Garden Grove League championship and into the CIF finals last fall, where the injury-riddled team lost to La Mirada after leading 21-7 in the early going. Grove finished 13-1.

Hay is replaced by former assistant coach Willy Puga, who served as offensive coordinator in 2009. He took over the team in April and has been in charge of spring practices.

Hay will still serve as the coach of the North team in the Orange County All-Star football game set for July 16 at Orange Coast College’s LeBard Stadium.

The 2010 Orange County All-Star softball game played last week at Cal State Fullerton had a distinctly local flavor to it.

The North team was coached by Rob Weil, head coach at Los Alamitos High School and the former head coach at PHS. On the North roster were infielder Kayla Anderson (Pacifica) and pitcher Krystian DeWitt (Pacifica).

On the South team was catcher Ariana Lopez of La Quinta.

The North won, 7-3. Anderson drove in one run for the North.

In last week’s listing of the all-Garden Grove League softball team in the Journal, the name of senior Anna Nguyen of Bolsa Grande was accidentally left out. Sorry, Anna!

Garden Grove League boys’ tennis coaches have chosen Phuy Le, a senior from Garden Grove High School, as Player of the Year for 2010.

The 2010 Coach of the Year is Bryan Tran of La Quinta High School.
