Week Zero is not a new movie about some Mayan apocalypse; it’s the week before the traditional opening of the local high school football season. Although most area teams won’t be in action until Sept. 9, some are getting a jump on the season this week.
Pacifica will host Murrieta Valley on Friday at Bolsa Grande Stadium. The Mariners finished second in the Empire League last season and advanced to the CIF Southwest Division quarterfinals, finishing 6-5-1 overall.
Western will hope to bounce back from an unexpectedly down season with its opener Friday hosting Ocean View at Handel Stadium. The Pioneers were 2-8 in 2009 and took fourth in their final season in the Orange League.
Orange will also be an early starter, taking on El Modena High at Fred Kelly Stadium Friday for the “city championship” of Orange. The Panthers were 3-7 last season and ended up fourth in the Golden West League.
An overview of the 2010 season will appear in next week’s edition of the Journal.
