Friday night football: Argos cage the Lions

Josh Webb scored four first-half touchdowns as the Garden Grove High Argonauts routed Westminster High’s Lions 46-14 Friday night at Garden Grove Stadium.

Webb, a 5-foot-11-inch senior speedster, scored on a 55-pass and run play, followed by a 73-yard TD run and 20-yard scoring keeper to put Grove ahead 20-7.

He closed out his TD total with a 75-yard punt return midway through the second period to push the Argos to a 32-7 edge.

“He’s going to get a lot of touches this season,” said Argonaut coach Willy Puga, who was making his head coaching debut for GGHS.

Other Argos scoring were Avery Williams on a 23-yard run, Jesse Lozano on a 1-yard burst and 20-yard pass from reserve quarterback Danny Sanchez to Shon Hall.

For the Lions, Dominic Pendergast threw TD passes to Carlos Torres and Andrew Nguyen.

The game pitted the CIF Southern Division’s top-ranked team, Grove, against the sixth-rated Lions.

Before the contest began, the uniform number (45) of Kevin Telles was retired by the Argos. Telles died after suffering heart failure a year ago in game against WHS. Dedicating the season to Telles, the Argos went 13-1 in 2009 and advanced to the CIF finals.
