Arrests made in killing of gambling winner

SANTA ANA (AP) – Prosecutors have charged a couple in the robbery death of a Westminster man who had just won thousands at a Southern California casino.

The Orange County District Attorney’s office on Friday filed murder, robbery and attempted robbery charges against 41-year old Tad Carroll and 47-year old Barbara Hamel.

Carroll and Hamel were arrested Thursday for investigation of the death of Chi Ngoc Bui after he left the Hawaiian Gardens Casino.

Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna says Bui was driving a friend home Sept. 3 when the pair cut him off, took some of his winnings and ran Bui over as they fled.

Both suspects remained in custody Friday. It was not immediately clear if they had retained attorneys.
