November is gone and with the arrival of December comes the opening of the high school basketball seasons for boys and girls. Most local teams from the Garden Grove-Stanton-Westminster area will begin action this week, starting a month of preparation for the league campaigns that start in January.
Defending league champions for area boys league include Cypress in the Empire League, Garden Grove in the Garden Grove League, Ocean View in the Golden West League and Magnolia in the Orange League.
On the girls’ side, the defending champs are Valencia in the Empire, Garden Grove in the Garden Grove League, Segerstrom in the Golden West League and Magnolia in the Orange League.
Among the smaller schools, Orangewood Academy in the Express League for girls.
Pacifica boys are in action this week in the La Quinta tournament, while Western co-hosts a tournament with Cypress. Also in the La Quinta event will be Bolsa Grande and Rancho Alamitos.
Garden Grove will be in the Glenn Tournament in Norwalk, while Santiago is in the Western-Cypress affair.
Westminster competes in the La Quinta, and Orange in the Glenn. Magnolia opens in the Loara Tournament.
As for the girls’ teams, Pacifica opens in the Orange Tournament. Crystal Cathedral starts with the Liberty Christian Tournament.
Bolsa Grande is in the Corona del Mar Tournament, while Santiago is in the Fullerton Tournament. Garden Grove and La Quinta start next week in the Oxford Academy and Fountain Valley tournaments.
Orange and Westminster also open this week in the Corona del Mar tournament. Magnolia will start with the Century Tournament.
