Brian Donahue was voted in as the new mayor of Stanton and David Shawver was elected mayor pro tem at Tuesday night’s organizational meeting of the city council.
Outgoing Mayor Ed Royce Sr. was presented with a parting gift, a plaque with a gavel, although he is still a member of the city council.
“Gift? I thought it was a bottle of water,” said Royce, “It’s been my great pleasure to be mayor of this fine city, we’ve got a lot of great people here. It has been my pleasure.”
Shaver said that Royce was a great mayor for his year.
“You did an outstanding job,” said Shawver, “Something that you folks might not know about the job of mayor is that you have a lot of responsibility to go to all the meetings . . . Ed is on a lot of committees and I don’t think that he ever missed a meeting.”
Royce said that he was pleased to have worked in Stanton, a community that he said was a fine city full of great people.
Royce said however, that he felt that the staffs of the city and the people who work in it are the integral ones to making sure that the city stays running well.
“You have something that I think few mayors have left in the county and that is a balanced budget,” said Shawver.
“Well, I think that it’s really all from you people,” responded Royce.
