A robbery attempt in Garden Grove Wednesday night ended up with one suspect shot dead by police and two arrested.
According to Lt. Jeff Nightengale of the Garden Grove Police Department, the incident took place around 9:30 p.m. when plainclothes officers witnessed the robbery of a 41-year-old Korean woman in the area of Galway Street and Garden Grove Boulevard.
A suspect vehicle was seen leaving the parking lot and when it stopped at a red light, officers approached the car, which held three suspects. One of the officers was grabbed and stabbed. A shooting followed and the suspects fled the scene.
The officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He is expected to make a full recovery.
Police found the suspect vehicle at Magnolia Street and Garden Grove Boulevard where officers began administering CPR to the suspect who had been shot. He was pronounced dead. A second suspect with minor wounds also taken to a local hospital before being released to police.
The deceased suspect was identified as a 16-year-old youth from Santa Ana, who had prior arrests for auto theft, burglary and assault. The male driver of the suspect vehicle was 16-year-old male Hispanic from Westminster. He is on formal probation for robbery, auto theft and vandalism.
A third suspect is a 16-year-old Anglo girl, whose residence was given as “either” Garden Grove or Cerritos. She has been arrested for criminal obstruction, alcohol-related offenses and probation violations.
The two surviving suspects were booked into Orange County Juvenile Hall on robbery charges.
