An 80-year-old man riding a motor scooter was injured Tuesday morning in Garden Grove when he ran into a signal arm at railroad crossing.
According to Lt. Jeff Nightengale of the Garden Grove Police Department, the incident took place at a railroad crossing on Lampson Avenue east of Western Avenue a short while after 10 a.m.
The cyclist, identified as John Jones of Westminster, was riding a Suzuki Bergman motor scooter east on Lampson as a Union Pacific train approached. Flashing lights and bells signaled the arrival of the train, and the arm of the safety bar came down, but the cycle crashed into the arm.
Jones was thrown from his cycle and sustained “moderate” injuries. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The train crew stopped the train and provided statements to authorities.
