The sound of “play ball” was heard across the baseball diamonds of area high schools Friday, and the new season is officially underway.
It’s way too early to start predicting the star teams and players of the 2011 campaign for schools in the Garden Grove-Stanton-Westminster area, but a few squads and individuals did make a big opening splash.
Orange and Magnolia were both off to a 2-0 start, and La Quinta won two of three contests.
Nate Anderson struck out 15 batters in seven innings Friday as Garden Grove defeated Cerritos 6-1. In Rancho Alamitos’ 15-2 win over Saddleback, Kory Week slammed a three-run home run in the 6th inning.
Most teams won’t start league play until April, but the Empire loop, with seven teams, starts action on Wednesday (March 16), beginning a two-game set between Valencia and Pacifica.
Here’s a quick look at local action through Monday.
Monday: Capistrano Valley Christian defeated La Quinta 8-6, while Orange bested Tustin 9-7. Westminster hammered Norte Vista 10-2.
Saturday: Buena Park beat Bolsa Grande 6-1 and Orange edged Carter 7-6. La Quinta beat Segerstrom 3-2 and Santiago defeated Santa Ana Valley 7-4.
Savanna defeated Westminster 4-3.
Friday: On opening day, La Quinta beat Sage Hill 4-1, while Garden Grove handled Cerritos 6-1. Magnolia edged Anaheim rival Western 4-2 and Westminster lost to Laguna Beach 2-0.
Rancho blasted Saddleback 15-2, while Los Amigos was beaten 14-0 by Costa Mesa.
