Softball roundup: Mariners lead Empire League

The Pacifica softball program has a long history of producing dominant pitchers, and the Mariners have another one in freshman Kaylee Carlson.

Her 12-1 record, with a sterling 1.14 ERA is one of the major reasons the M’s are atop the Empire League with a two-game edge over rival Valencia. She’s got six shutouts and has fanned 69 batters while walking only 20 in 79-plus innings.

The Mariners have built a 14-2 record (7-0 in league) and are rated seventh in Division One.

In the Garden Grove League, the Garden Grove Argonauts have vaulted over La Quinta into first place. Grove (3-0 in league, 6-3 overall) leads Rancho Alamitos (10-6, 3-1). Santiago and La Quinta are third and fourth.

Orange and Westminster are fourth and sixth in the Golden West League; Magnolia is fourth in the Orange League.

Today (Thursday) Bolsa Grande will host Santa Ana in a non-league contest. On Monday, Western will host Santa Ana and Pacifica will travel to Irvine to take on Northwood in a double-header.

Here’s a look at what happened in area softball action over the past week.
