Police shoot gun-wielding man in GG

A 41-year-old man is hospitalized in critical condition after being shot by a Garden Grove police officer early this morning.

According to Lt. Jeff Nightengale of the Garden Grove Police Department, the man was shot when he raised a handgun at officers in his home in the 13000 block of Ferndale around 2:14 a.m.

The GGPD received a call from a man claiming he had just “committed suicide.” Officers sent to the scene found the man outside his home. Police say the man brandished a knife. He obeyed police orders to drop the knife, but then pulled a handgun from his waistband and was shot.

The man was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange.

An investigation is underway by the Orange County District Attorney’s office and the GGPD. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the GGPD at (714) 741-5800.
