Prep football week five outlook

Although Empire League play is underway, most local prep football teams will still be playing their final pre-league contest this weekend. With recent powers (Garden Grove and Pacifica) having slow starts – they’re 2-6 between them – it could be a wide-open race for league championships.

Emerging as the top team so far is Los Amigos (4-1). The Lobos have a bye week, but the two number two teams (Western and Rancho Alamitos, both 3-1) are in action. The Pioneers start Empire League play Friday, hosting a good Cyrpress (3-1) team. Rancho is on the road to play Pioneer.

The top local matchup is today (Thursday) at Bolsa Grande Stadium as Pacifica hosts Westminster in a non-league contest. On Friday, Garden Grove may have a tough time halting its three-game skid as the Argos host El Toro (4-1).

Here’s the complete weekend schedule.

WEEK FIVE GAMES

• Thursday: Westminster at Pacifica (Bolsa Grande Stadium).

•  Friday: El Toro at Garden Grove, Rancho Alamitos at Pioneer, Saddleback at La Quinta (Bolsa Grande Stadium), Santiago at Anaheim (Glover Stadium), Bolsa Grande at Calvary Chapel/Santa Ana (Estancia High School), Magnolia vs. Loara (Handel Stadium), Cypress at Western.
