The Garden Grove League and other local loops start play this week with a surprise set of contenders.
Some observers saw Garden Grove, the three-time defending GGL champs, as the heavy favorite, with Santiago in second.
But, beset by injuries to key players, the Argonauts have stumbled to a 1-4 start, and Santiago is winless in five games. The new favorites are Rancho Alamitos and Los Amigos, both 4-1.
Those two teams will meet, appropriately enough, on the final regular game of the season, on Nov. 10. In the meantime, there’s a whole lot of games to be played in the Empire, GG, Orange and Golden West leagues before we go handing out any crowns.
Perhaps the most interesting game is tonight (Thursday) at Garden Grove Stadium when the defending champion Argonauts take on the new co-favorites, the Los Amigos Lobos.
Also on Thursday, in an Orange League opener, Magnolia (1-4) will host Anaheim (2-3) at Western High’s Handel Stadium.
On Friday, La Quinta (2-3) will visit Santiago at Garden Grove Stadium. At Bolsa Grande Stadium, it’ll be Rancho and Bolsa Grande (2-3). The Mats came into the season with the county’s longest-losing streak but have now won two straight.
In the Golden West League, Orange (0-4) will visit Segerstrom (3-2) while Westminster (1-4) will host Ocean View (2-3). In the Empire League, Pacifica (2-3 overall, 0-1 in league) visits Kennedy (2-4, 0-2) at Western’s Handel Stadium and Western (3-2, 0-1) visits Yorba Linda (6-0, 2-0.
