High school basketball action for the Garden Grove-Stanton-Westminster area begins as soon as Saturday, with nearly every boys’ and girls’ team in the region on the court before the end of November.
The Magnolia boys team will be first up, hosting La Habra on Saturday. The LA Quinta Tournament, starting on Monday, will involve boys’ teams from Pacifica, Rancho Alamitos, Western and, of course, La Quinta. Garden Grove, the three-time defending Garden Grove League boys champ, opens Monday in the Glenn Tournament.
Also on Monday, Santiago and Orange are in the Godinez Tournament. On Wednesday, Los Amigos will host Saddleback.
On the girls’ side, the early starter is Westminster. The Lions will start play Monday in the Corona del Mar Tournament. On Tuesday, Garden Grove and Rancho Alamitos begin play in the St. Anthony’s Tournament in Long Beach. The Vaqueros are the defending GGL girls’ co-champs, along with Los Amigos.
Orange goes into action first on Dec. 5, hosting Newport Harbor. The next day, Magnolia will host Rancho Alamitos. Pacifica is the last girls’ team in action, opening with the Ocean View Tournament, which starts on Dec. 12.
League play starts in early to mid-January for most local teams. The Empire League begins on Wednesday, Jan. 4, while the Garden Grove League begins a week later, on Jan. 11.
