Thirty-one-year-old Jason Nunez was fatally shot by Garden Grove police Sunday evening after being reported as the suspect in an incident involving a man chasing people with a knife at Strathmore Avenue and Dorado Street.

At around 6:45 p.m. a call was received that a man wielding a knife was chasing people.

According to police information officer Lt. Jeff Nightengale, the incident spurred from an argument, the details of which are not being released due to investigation from the District Attorney’s office

Nunez allegedly broke windows and started a small fire on a front lawn prior to chasing people.

After police arrived at the scene, they asked Nunez multiple times to drop the knife, however he did not comply. An officer-involved shooting occurred and Nunez died at the scene.

“We’re not releasing the details of what prompted the officers to shoot,” said Nightengale, “And we’re not releasing the details of how many shots were fired. This is pretty typical in officer involved shootings when the DA gets involved in investigations.”

Nightengale said that details would become more available after the investigation was completed, which could take six months.

This is the fifth officer involved shooting for the Garden Grove Police Department in 2011.
