Stanton has its first female mayor in over 20 years.

Carol Warren was nominated for the annual mayor position by council member Al Ethans, a motion that was seconded by David Shawver, who is serving a consecutive year as mayor pro tem.

The last female mayor was Martha Weishaupt in 1987.

Warren said, “I’m excited.”

Her first official duty as mayor was the opening of nominations for mayor pro tem.

“Hey, it’s your job now,” said Brian Donahue, 2011 mayor.

Shawver was nominated by Ethans and the motion was seconded by Ed Royce Sr.

This last year has not been the easiest for the outgoing mayor Brian Donahue. Donahue has overseen a severe reduction in staff, massive budget cutbacks and a loss of revenue in the city.

“It was a bad year folks,” said Donahue of the setbacks, “A lot of good happened, too though. We have our new park site started, improvement of Tina Pacific area and the building and opening of the new fire station . . .the Stanton Community Foundation has done exceptionally well . . . but it doesn’t offset that we had to get rid of some people.”

Shawver said that Donahue held the council together and lent a general feeling of cohesiveness through the rough year.

“It was not a good 365 days,” said Ethans, “I want to thank him personally for all his efforts.”

Royce thanked Donahue for a job well done over the year.
