Police are searching for additional information in a hit and run traffic collision early Saturday in Garden Grove that left a man dead.
According to Lt. Jeff Nightengale, the incident took place at Kerry Street and Westminster Avenue around 1: 20 a.m. Arriving police found a severely injured Hispanic man lying in the eastbound lanes of Westminster Avenue.
He was taken to a local hospital where he died shortly thereafter.
Police believe the man was crossing Westminster Avenue on foot between Kerry and Erin streets and was not in a crosswalk. He was likely struck by at least one vehicle, knocking him to the ground. He was then hit by a second car. Neither motorist stopped at the scene.
However, a woman arrived later and told investigators she had struck the downed man and fled the scene. Her vehicle in Santa Ana was showed to have evidence of the accident, according to police.
The woman was released after giving police a statement.
Witnesses in the area reported seeing a large white van leaving the area around the time of the incident. It’s not known if this vehicle was involved, but police and seeking to locate it and its driver. Police say that witnesses also reported hearing screaming in the area before the victim was found, although it’s not known if that was related to the incident.
The Orange County Coroner’s Office is conducting its own investigation into the death of the man, who has yet to be identified.
