GARDEN GROVE (AP) – A science experiment gone awry sent a 30-foot-long balloon drifting over Orange County last week.
The balloon escaped from a science class at Pacifica High in Garden Grove last Wednesday morning and was last seen heading toward John Wayne Airport.
Instructor Steve Doucette told reporters the Advanced Placement Earth Science class was experimenting with a solar-heated balloon, measuring 3
0-feet-long and 3 feet in diameter, when it got loose and floated away.
Doucette says the balloon reached 1,500 feet in about 10 minutes, then it changed direction and headed south.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman says air traffic controllers at John Wayne Airport were notified but so far there’s no indication that the balloon entered the airport’s airspace.
