Westminster planners OK a rehab facility

A proposal to permit to operate an outpatient drug addiction and alcoholism rehabilitation facility won approval at last Wednesday’s meeting of the Westminster Planning Commission.

The planners voted 4-0 to approve the request to establish the facility at 13800 Arizona St., in an area with several medical facilities.

It would operate from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and would serve about 40 clients at a time. There would be no detox at the site and no overnight stays.

A public hearing on the proposal was held on May 11, 2011 and “about 10” people attended. Among the possible problems raised by speakers at that meeting were concerns about safety, property values, pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

But at the recent meeting, no one spoke against the proposal, and one neighbor spoke in favor. According to a city planner, the applicant – Arlid Braathen – held a meeting for community members and allayed some concerns.

A total of 17 conditions were attached to the permit, including keeping exterior entrances closed at all times, and having an on-site manager present during business hours.
