Area jobless rates still drifting upwards

Garden Grove Journal

Unemployment rose slightly across Orange County in March, and that took the jobless rates in Garden Grove, Stanton and Westminster up as well.

According to the state Department of Employment Development, the county actually gained 13,000 jobs for the month, but an increase of people in the job market pushed the statistic up modestly.

Orange County’s jobless rate for March was 8.1, up from 8 percent in February. For Garden Grove the number rose from 10 percent to 10.2 percent and in Stanton the figure went from 12.9 percent to 13.1 percent.

In Westminster unemployment rose from 8.9 percent to 9.1 percent.

The EDD figures are not actual counts, but estimates based on each city’s historical employment patterns.

Other nearby cities and their unemployment rates include:

• Anaheim 10.14 percent.

• Cypress 8.6 percent.

• Fountain Valley 6.8 percent.

• Orange 7.5 percent.

• Santa Ana 12.9 percent.
