Pacifica High School’s powerhouse baseball and softball teams advanced to quarterfinal rounds in CIF Southern Section with wins Tuesday.
The Mariner baseball team defeated Alta Loma 4-0 and will play in the third round of Division 2 post-season play Friday at Mission Viejo.
In Division 3, Garden Grove was eliminated when the Argonauts lost 5-3 to Bonita. Also in Division 3, Westminster was likewise knocked out of post-season by losing 10-4 to Quartz Hill.
Pacifica’s softball team defeated Royal 2-0 and goes in to quarterfinal action today (Thursday) against the winner of the West Ranch vs. Santiago (Corona) in Division 1.
Rancho Alamitos was knocked out of the softball playoffs Tuesday when the Vaqueros lost 9-5 to Kaiser High of Fontana.

PREP SOFTBALL/BASEBALL: Three local teams in CIF Southern Section baseball and softball action last Thursday made their 2012 playoff debuts in impressive fashion.
Pacifica’s baseball team, champs of the Empire League, blasted Redondo Union 7-0 in the Division 2 first round. Kyle Davis pitched a one-hitter and recorded his eighth win of the season.
In softball action, Garden Grove overpowered San Marcos 11-1 in the Division 4 opener. Jasmine Antunez threw a one-hitter, striking out seven batters and improving her record to 18-4. She also had three hits, a walk and two stolen bases.
Pacifica blanked Rosary 7-0 in Division 1 softball. The top-ranked Mariners got a combined effort from aces Kaley Winegarner and Kaylee Carlson, yielding just four hits. Winegarner now has a 13-0 record. Kristina Akiona, Nicole DeWitt and Erika Campbell all homered for the M’s.
Two local teams advanced in CIF Southern Section first round baseball action Friday.
In Division 3, Garden Grove defeated Montebello 4-1. Christian Smith got his 11th win (against one loss), striking out seven batters and yielding just four hits. Alex Camino, Sean Grennon and Chris Williams each had two hits for the Argonauts.
Also in Division 3, Westminster scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game and eventually won it in 11 innings, defeating La Serna 7-6. John Aguillares, who had three hits in the game, drove in the winning run with a single.
The quarterfinals are set for Friday for both divisions.
PREP TENNIS: In boys’ tennis, Garden Grove League champion Garden Grove and runner-up La Quinta advanced to Tuesday’s CIF Division 4 semifinals. Grove defeated Mark Keppel High of Alhambra 12-6. Cody Tran, the Argos’ top singles player, was trailing 1-4 when he rallied to pull off a 7-5 win.
La Quinta defeated Laguna Beach to advance to the “final four.” At our deadline, results were not available for Grove’s contest with Viewpoint High, or La Quinta’s with Buckley.
