Journalisms: Old school cars, church move and more

OLD SCHOOL RIDES

The Old Style Car Club will be holding its Fourth Annual Memorial Day Weekend Car Show on Saturday, May 26 at Wilmore Elementary School in Westminster from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The event will include a disc jockey, raffles and food for sale. Sponsors of the event include Bristol Sound, La Casa Garcia, The Truck Man and Super Mex. All entries should check in between 7 and 10 a.m. at the school located at 7122 Maple St.

A donation to the school will be made from the Old Style Car Club.

TOP SCHOLAR

A Best Buy scholarship has been awarded to Aimee Abrams-Widdicombe, a student at Foothill High School and the daughter of Patti Widdicombe and the late Edward Abrams.

She will attend Scripps College in Claremont for the 2012-3 academic year. The Widdicombe family owns and operates six McDonald’s franchises in Garden Grove.

ONE BLOCK OVER?

The Crystal Cathedral ministry might be swapping sanctuaries with a nearby Catholic church in Garden Grove, according to published reports.

The Los Angeles Times said last week that Crystal Cathedral President John Charles told his congregation that St. Callistus Church, located a few blocks away, is the only option being considered for a move.

The Cathedral, which is being sold to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange, is at Chapman Avenue and Lewis Street. The St. Callistus campus, which includes a school, is at Lewis and Garden Grove Boulevard.

Under a proposed deal, the new congregation could use St. Callistus for one year, rent free. After that, the rent would eventually rise to $25,000 a month. It’s unclear whether the Crystal Cathedral’s school would relocate as well.

FAIR ENOUGH

Clinton-Mendenhall Elementary School in Garden Grove is hosting a community resource fair and open house today (Thursday) for students and their families.

The free resource fair, scheduled 5 to 6:30 p.m. brings together more than 20 agencies and organizations from the community with information on health care, family support, crime prevention, literacy, housing and financial counseling. A school-wide open house follows from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. with all classrooms open for visits by attendees.

Pizza dinner will be served at 5 p.m. to those who have pre-ordered it. Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase.

For more information, call the school at (714) 663-6146.
