Pacifica softball loses, baseball advances

It was agony and ecstasy on the diamond for Pacifica High School this week as one team was upset and another won easily.

Pacifica’s nationally-ranked softball team lost in the CIF Division I quarterfinals 4-3 to Santiago of Corona on Thursday. The Mariners led 3-0 until the fifth inning as starter Kaley Winegarner held the Sharks to just two hits.

But when Kaylee Carlson came in to pitch, Santiago put up two singles and two home runs to grab the lead, which they held despite a late Mariner rally.

Pacifica finished the season 28-3.

The baseball team, on the other hand, won easily Friday, crushing defending CIF champion Mission Viejo in the Division 2 quarterfinals 17-2. Kyle Davis went 4-for-4, hit two homers and drove in seven runs in the route at the Diablo field.

He also pitched five innings for the Mariners, giving up just one run on two hits and striking out five batters.

Max Bethell and Devan Campos also homered for the M’s.

Pacifica (27-5) advances to the Division 2 baseball semifinals Tuesday against South Hills.
