Garden Grove will have two teams vying for CIF championships this week.
Pacifica, champions of the Empire League, will face Aliso Niguel in the Division 2 baseball title game Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
Garden Grove, champions of the Garden Grove League, will face Kaiser HighSchool of Fontana in the Division 4 softball finals on either Friday or Saturday at Barber Park in Irvine. (Go to www.ggjournal.com) for time and day).
The Mariners (28-5) reached the final with a 2-1 win over South Hills of West Covina on Tuesday. Max Bethell starred for Pacifica, pitching five one-hit innings and driving in the winning run with a single in the top of the sixth.
The Argonauts (24-5) qualified with a 5-1 win over Buena High of Ventura Tuesday. Jasmine Antunez improved her record to 17-0, yielding only three hits and one run.
Jenevee Peres starred with the bat, going 3-for-4 and driving in two runs, one with the homer.
Earlier, it was agony and ecstasy on the diamond for Pacifica High School last week as one team was upset and another won easily.
Pacifica’s nationally-ranked softball team lost in the CIF Division 1 quarterfinals 4-3 to Santiago of Corona on Thursday.
The Mariners led 3-0 until the fifth inning as starter Kaley Winegarner held the Sharks to just two hits.
But when Kaylee Carlson came in to pitch, Santiago put up two singles and two home runs to grab the lead, which they held despite a late Mariner rally.
Pacifica finished the season 28-3.
The baseball team, on the other hand, won easily Friday, crushing defending CIF champion Mission Viejo in the Division 2 quarterfinals 17-2. Kyle Davis went 4-for-4, hit two homers and drove in seven runs in the route at the Diablo field.
He also pitched five innings for the Mariners, giving up just one run on two hits and striking out five batters.
Max Bethell and Devan Campos also homered for the M’s.
Garden Grove High’s softball team rallied in the final innings to defeat Serrano Thursday and advance to the CIF Division 4 semifinals Tuesday.
The Argonauts, champions of the Garden Grove League, trailed 2-0 but scored once in the third, twice in the sixth and once in the bottom of the seventh in the game at their home field at Mark Twain School.
Jasmine Antunez held the Diamondbacks to four hits. The Argos were led by Jenevee Peres, who had three hits, two RBIs and a home run for Grove.
