Journalisms: Flag Day, reading and rehab

A GRAND OLD FLAG

The City of Westminster will be hosting its annual Flag Day celebration today (Thursday) at noon in the Civic Center, 8200 Westminster Blvd.

There will be a traditional reading of “That Ragged Old Flag.” The Westminster Elks Lodge will present the history of the flag and presentation of colors will be made by the Westminster Police Color Guard, along with Christian Redman from the Nicholson Pipes and Drums.

A special invitation is extended to all Gold Star and Blue Star Mothers, all U.S. veterans, their families and any family members of service personnel serving our country.

The event is free. Refreshments will be served and free parking is available.

 

MEDICAL CHECKUP

In the article in the June 7 edition of the Journal about the Shifa organization that wants to open a free clinic site in Garden Grove, it was stated that the organization received a grant for $15,000 when actually the grant was only for $10,000. Also, among other synoptic tests, the clinic offers a body mass index not a blood mass index examination as was stated in the article.

 

READ, WHITE & BLUE

The summer reading program at the Chapman Branch Library in Garden Grove will start on Thursday, June 21 and continue on through Tuesday, July 31.

Kids can read to earn drawing tickets, which they can put into a grand prize raffle to win prizes including an iPod shuffle. The grand prize drawing will be held on July 31.

Storytime for toddlers (18 months to 2 years) will be every Tuesday at 11:15 a.m. For preschoolers (3 to 5 years old) it will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.

Registration starts on June 21. The library is located  at 9182 Chapman Ave. (between Magnolia and Gilbert streets) in Garden Grove.  Call (714) 539-2115 for more information.

 

WILL POWER
The box office for Shakespeare Orange County’s summer season in the Festival Amphitheatre in Garden Grove is now open from 3-6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and for two hours before each performance.

“Richard III” starring John Walcutt as Richard opens July 19 and tickets may be purchased by calling the box office (714-590-1575) or by going online to www.shakespeare.org.

The Amphitheatre is located in the Village Green Park on Main Street, west of Euclid Street.

 

CANDLEWOOD RELIT

The renovation of the Candlewood Suites hotel 12901 Garden Grove Blvd. (at Haster Street) will be showcased on Tuesday (June 19) from 4-7 p.m.

The hotel is holding an “Open House Fiesta” to introduce the public to its makeover.
