Reduced budget goes to Westminster council

The Westminster City Council meets Wednesday to take a final look at the city’s proposed budget for 2012-13 and perhaps to officially oppose toll lanes on the San Diego (405) Freeway.

If the budget is approved as is, the city will use more than $3 million in reserves to keep it balanced. But Wednesday’s vote should also end an ongoing fiscal saga, at least until next year.

The Orange County Transportation Authority has presented three scenarios for its I-405 expansion project. The third plan calls for adding four lanes in total, including toll lanes. Mayor Margie Rice said she opposes toll lanes because of the cost to drivers and potential damages to local businesses.

Councilmember Tyler Diep has sponsored a resolution opposing the third plan for the council to consider.

Council meetings are held the second and fourth Wednesdays in the Council Chambers at 8200 Westminster Blvd.  Meetings begin at 7 p.m.
