Don Alexander: Happy for Leah, let down by Dodgers

I am so happy right now I can barely write about sports. Although, the Miss California contest is a sport, sort of. Anyway, a very deserving Garden Grove contestant won it all last Saturday in Fresno.

Don Alexander

Leah Cecil grew up in Garden Grove. She plays the harp expertly and was sponsored last year by the Garden Grove Rotary Club when she was runner-up in the Miss California contest. We’ll have more about Leah in other parts of today’s Garden Grove Journal but I can’t say enough good things about her.

Going from the top to the bottom I can’t believe the Dodgers. In over 60 innings they have scored two runs and all of them came in the same inning.

Nobody has five shutouts against them in a week. Are these Double-A players trying to hit for the Dodgers? Come on!

Vince Scully doesn’t even bother with “hits with runners in scoring position” anymore. He just wonders if they can score a run! I don’t watch to see if the Dodgers will win. They only won one in nine recently; I watch to see if they have scored a run!

I can’t go to the refrigerator anymore when the Dodgers are up. They’re up and down before I can get the pie out. Hey, I might lose some weight.

The Dodgers were over seven games up on the Giants in the NL-West a couple of weeks ago. Now they are fighting to stay out of third place.

And what about my stupid bet I made in April with my smart brother-in-law. He bet me on the difference between wins for the Angels and Dodgers. Now they are about even. The Dodgers were up by eight! He has the Angels.

I’m a big Angels and Dodgers fan so I won’t make this bet again. And who thought the Angels would catch fire and the Dodgers would swim in the Arctic?

I can’t come up with a metaphor for how cold the Dodgers are. When I coached Garden Grove Little League we (Colts) beat a team 46-2. They (Beavers) didn’t win a game all year. They weren’t cold. They were just a kind of a bad Little League team.

But the Dodger players are making millions and are supposed to be able to hit the ball once in a while. I know babies that hit a balloon farther than the Dodger hitters have.

Do I sound a bit bitter? I’m not. Leah won Miss California. But the Dodgers have really let me down.

Lamar Odom will be able to stay in town with his lovely Kardashian wife. He was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. Kind of like deja vu all over again. Now he can resume his reality show. Why should Kim and Kourtney get all the glory!

I like Lamar. I hope the rumors that he gave up in Dallas aren’t true. The Mavs owner, Mark Cuban, doesn’t like shelling out millions and watch superstars loaf down the court. I don’t blame him.

Whatever the reason he was “laid off” the Mavericks. Did you see the reality show? He’s a man of few words. He just wanted to sit in that chair with very long legs almost knocking over the TV cameras. That looked kind of weird, didn’t it?But all seriousness aside, he will help them. He’s good when he wants to be and I think the Lakers trading him and his recent failure with the Mavericks will spur him on.

Anyone getting excited for the coming Olympics? London is waiting. The athletes are waiting, and I’m waiting. I like them a lot more now that all athletes are eligible. It used to be that the good guys (free states) had to use amateurs and the bad guys (Russians and their stooges) got to use professionals.

I hated that! Our poor little kids played against their married veterans, some with many Olympics behind them. They would all meet in the quad. We would talk about music and rock stars and they would talk about making a living and retirement.

But now, bring ‘em on!
