DMV worker gets 90 days for fraud, theft

An employee of the Department of Motor Vehicles office in Westminster was convicted of fraud and petty theft on Wednesday. Patricia Rosario Casas, 44, pleaded guilty to four felony counts of computer access and fraud, and four misdemeanor counts of petty theft, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

The Anaheim resident stole a total of $106 in cash of customer-paid fees from the DMV, changing them to show up in the computer system as a “no fee transaction” so she could pocket the money.

Her employer’s suspicions were first aroused when a customer complained about not receiving the change for his payment, which was entered in the system as a moneyless exchange, on Feb. 15, 2011. Casas was arrested on April 19, 2011.

Casas has been sentenced to 90 days in jail, three years of formal probation and restitution. She can opt out of the jail time by doing community service in its place.
