A special meeting is set for Tuesday afternoon by the Stanton City Council to take up a proposal to let the public vote again on an increase in the utility users tax.
The council will convene at 4 p.m. at City Hall, 7800 Katella Ave.
A ballot measure to increase the tax from 5 to 7.5 percent – Measure J – was put before voters in June, but defeated in an election with a low turnout. Supporters of placing the plan on the November general election ballot feel that with a presidential election, a higher turnout will give a better chance of passage.
The rejection by voters in June complicated Stanton’s already shaky financial picture. The city has been battered by the lingering effects of the Great Recession, the end of redevelopment, and rising costs for public safety.
Stanton does not have its own police or fire departments; it contracts with county agencies for those services.

This article mentions a low voter turnout but 46% more voters turned out for this utility tax measure than did in 2001. I am unable to understand why this June it was a “low” voter turnout while in 2001 it wasn’t. Maybe because the city council lost this time around? Also,if there are supporters (besides our city council) in favor of putting it back on the ballot then they are misinformed about our city’s needs more revenue. Our mayor mentioned last week in the OC Register, “Stanton has provided a model for other cities to follow to reduce their budgets and ensure financial solvency in a time of shrinking revenues.” Why would we need more revenue if everything is “under control”?
