The idea of a refreshing late summer shower appeals as we suffer through the dog days of August. Among local high school football teams, the first to plunge is Western, visiting Costa Mesa on Friday at 7 p.m. in a non-league contest.
The Pioneers, who used to dominate the Orange League, have found it tougher going in the Empire League. Toby Howell’s charges had an uncommon 4-6 record last year and missed the playoffs.
Among Western’s top players will be Kyle Manliguis, a running back, and Chris Zarate, quarterback.
Costa Mesa was 8-3 last year overall and took second place in the Orange Coast League, losing in the first round of the CIF playoffs to Los Amigos.
Players to keep an eye on for the Mustangs include running back Orende Crenshaw, linebacker Noah Jayarajah and running back Justin Smith.
The rest of the teams from the Garden Grove-Stanton-Westminster area will start play next Thursday and Friday. We’ll start our High Five ranking of the top area teams in our Aug. 30 issue.
For our paying subscribers, our Monday edition (also available online) will wrap up all the Thursday-Friday-Saturday action each week.
