A long standoff between a man and members of the Garden Grove police SWAT team ended late Thursday night with the arrest of a 70-year-old resident.
According to Lt. Jeff Nightengale of the Garden Grove Police Department, the incident took place at the Bahai Trailer Park, 13096 Blackbird St. A woman had called police and told them her husband and her had been involved in a physical altercation.
When officers arrived, the husband refused to speak to them, and made threats, said Lt. Nightengale. Alerted that the man had a gun in his home,
officers backed off and when further attempts to communicate failed, they called for more assistance.
The GGPD’s Hostage Negotiation Team, and the Special Weapons and Tactics Team were called in. Nearby residents were evacuated and taken to an auditorium at the Garden Grove Medical Center with the help of the Red Cross.
After several hours of attempts to talk with the man, the SWAT team moved in and arrested Carl Landers. He had a history of medical problems, and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation of his medical and mental status. A loaded gun was found and booked as evidence.
He could face charges of domestic assault and threatening a police officer.
