Western High School opened Week Zero of local high school football with an appropriate score, blanking Costa Mesa 10-0 in a non-league game Friday night at Estancia High School.
The Pioneers, 4-6 last year, played tough defense and just enough offense. Western went ahead 7-0 in the second quarter on a 55-yard run by Loc Nguyen, then added a 35-yard field goal by Dylan Amaria in the second quarter.
Lafaele Masaniai led the team with 75 yards rushing.
Western will be in action again this coming Friday, hosting Katella at Handel Stadium.
