A jury trial has been scheduled for Jan. 28 in the case of a man arrested in Garden Grove in 2010 and later linked to murder by bludgeoning.
According to the Orange County District Attorney’s office, Jose Fuentes will be tried in the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana on homicide charges in connection with the death of Pedro Cerecer in Santa Ana.
Authorities allege that Fuentes had a month-long “intimate relationship” with Cerecer, but plotted to murder him in order to steal his money, electronics and car.
On June 5, 2010, he allegedly went to the victim’s Santa Ana apartment for “drinks and sex.”
Once the victim went to sleep, it’s alleged, Fuentes took a decorative rock, straddled the sleeping Cerecer and beat him to death with it.
He then allegedly took the victim’s credit cards, cell phone and electronics, including a flat-screen TV, loading it into Cerecer’s Toyota sedan.
The next day, Fuentes was driving when he was stopped by Garden Grove police, who arrested him for possession of a controlled substance and driving without a valid license. The car was impounded.
Later Santa Ana police detectives investigating the death of Cerecer ran a search for his missing car and found it had been impounded by Garden Grove police, connecting Fuentes to the incident.
