Second trial in baby death starts Monday

A jury trial is set to begin in Santa Ana in the case of a woman accusing of killing her newborn infant and dumping the body in a dumpster behind a Stanton restaurant.

According to the Orange County District Attorney’s office, Juana Perez Valencia will stand trial in the Central Justice Center beginning on Monday.

The 21-year-old Anaheim resident faces homicide charges in the death of a baby she gave birth to in 2009 at the Sombrero’s eatery where she worked.

It’s alleged that her baby was born alive, but that she killed the female child, placed the body in a plastic bag and threw it into the trash bin. She checked into West Anaheim Hospital for treatment, and police made a connection between her and the corpse.

This will be the second trial for Valencia. A jury deadlocked on a first degree murder charge in January and a new trial was ordered.  If she is convicted, she faces a possible sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
