Long-time Garden Grove resident Marilyn Lewis Tortolano will serve as one of three citizens on the Garden Grove Unified School District’s Personnel Commission.
The appointment approval took place at Tuesday’s school board meeting.
Tortolano will officially begin her new term on Oct. 10 at the next personnel commission meeting.
She will serve a three-year term.
According to Suzy Seymour, director of classified personnel, the commissioners are selected for service much like a civil service commission.
The commissioners help handle personnel issues, act as a buffer and protect against potential for cronyism and nepotism.
The commissioners are tasked with handling issues for classified employees, such as bus drivers, clerks and maintenance workers.
“I’m very happy that Marilyn Tortolano is going to serve on the commission . . . she’s a long-time Garden Grove resident and a personal friend,” Linda Reed, school board member.
Reed also mentioned that Tortolano has done a lot of work with the school district for a long time.
She also serves on the Boys and Girls Club of Garden Grove Board of Directors, is on the board of Shakespeare Orange County and is co-owner of the Garden Grove Journal.
She is also a product of the local public schools, having been graduated from Garden Grove High School.
Tortolano is an assistant vice president for CNA Insurance, working out of Brea.
Tortolano is being re-appointed to the commissioner position after former commissioner Frank Noe vacated the spot due to health issues last year.
Other panel members are Diane Donovan and Jim Franks.
