The opening of league play was not kind to Western, as the Pioneers lost their Empire League 2012 initial contest 23-10 to Cypress at Handel Field.
Although the game was tied 3-3 in the early going, the Centurions pulled away with one touchdown in each of the last three quarters. The lone Pioneer TD came on a 20-yard run by Lafaele Masaniai, who would finish with 138 yards rushing.
Western (3-2) will try to even up its EL mark on Friday, hosting Yorba Linda.
