Argonauts to tackle El Toro Friday night

It’s not often that a local high school football team clashes with one from Orange County’s elite but that will happen Friday at Trabuco Hills High when Garden Grove (3-1) faces El Toro (5-0) in a non-league game.

The Chargers are ranked 10th in the tough Pac-5 Division, and sixth in Orange County. The Argonauts have some claims, too, with a seventh-place spot in the Southern Division poll.

El Toro is loaded with talent and is led by quarterback Conner Manning, who set a new Orange County record by passing for 613 yards and six touchdowns in a wild 77-46 win over Valhalla of El Cajon last week. He’s got 2,255 yards total so far.

The Argonauts are led by quarterback Angel Martinez, who has thrown for just under 700 yards in four games. Grove also boasts a multi-pronged running attack and a strong defense and offensive line.

Also this week:

Thursday: Savanna at Santiago (Garden Grove Stadium), Magnolia at Loara (Glover Stadium), Calvary Chapel of Santa Ana at Bolsa Grande.

Friday: Kennedy at Pacifica (Garden Grove), Yorba Linda at Western, Orange at Sunny Hills (Buena Park High), La Quinta at Saddleback (Santa Ana Stadium), Anaheim at Rancho Alamitos (Bolsa Grande), Buena Park at Westminster.

Saturday: Ocean View at Los Amigos (Garden Grove).

Garden Grove (3-1) will face El Toro (5-0) Friday night.
