Pacifica 38, Cypress 8
The Mariners kept their CIF playoff hopes alive with the upset win Friday at Western High’s Handel Field.
With star running back Jake Brito sidelined for much of the game due to an injury, the Centurions could not generate much offense. But Pacifica, now 5-4 overall and 2-2-2 in the Empire League, got a strong performance by quarterback Nick Howard, who threw for 247 yards and a touchdown.
Nick Seto also scored twice for the Mariners, who never trailed.
In their final regular season game, Pacifica will visit Yorba Linda High on Thursday.
Garden Grove 38, Rancho Alamitos 0
The Argonauts clinched at least a tie for the Garden Grove League title with the overpowering win Friday night before a homecoming crowd at their campus stadium.
Defense was the key, as Grove intercepted three Rancho passes en route to the win over their historic rivals. The victory improved GG’s record to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in league. Rancho fell to 6-3 and 2-2.
Sione Masoe scored twice and threw a touchdown pass. Quarterback Angel Martinez ran for one score and caught Masoe’s TD toss.
Rancho was led by Kevin Duquet with 33 yards rushing.
Next week, Garden Grove will host Bolsa Grande on Friday, while Rancho will take on Santiago Thursday night.
Westminster 42, Loara 20
Led by Steven Anderson’s 200 passing yards, the Lions clinched no worse than a tie for the Golden West League crown with the win at home Friday night.
Anderson threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third. David Fludd ran for 101 yards and one score.
Westminster (5-4, 4-0) will meet second place Segerstrom Friday.
La Quinta 26, Bolsa Grande 21
Don Tran again led the Aztecs, running for 167 yards and three scores in the win Friday night at the Matador home field. Bolsa was led by Armando Ahumada, who returned a kickoff 82 yards for the TD and scored on a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter.
The win keeps playoff hopes alive for La Quinta (4-5, 2-1), while Bolsa drops to 1-8 and 0-4 and remains in sixth place.
Next week Bolsa will visit Garden Grove Friday night, and La Quinta will face Los Amigos.
