Four local teams in CIF playoffs

Garden Grove Journal

The second season of local high school football is open to begin for four teams from the Garden Grove-Stanton-Westminster area.

Garden Grove, Westminster, Rancho Alamitos and Los Amigos advance to the first round of the CIF Southern Division playoffs this Friday evening.

Garden Grove’s Argonauts (8-2) overall, are seeded third in the division. The Garden Grove League champs start at home hosting Beckman (3-7) an at-large team from the Pacific Coast League. The last time these two schools clashed was in the 2010 CIF championship game, when the Argos pulled out a 31-30 win for the school’s first CIF football crown.

Westminster (6-4), champions of the Golden West League, will also be at home, hosting Woodbridge (5-5), the third place team from the Pacific Coast League.

On the road will be Los Amigos and Rancho Alamitos, who finished second and third in the GGL. The Lobos (7-3) will travel to play Estancia High (7-3, second place team from the Orange Coast League).

Rancho Alamitos (7-3) will face Northwood (4-6), the second place team from the PCL at Irvine High’s stadium.

If one of the local teams advance to the CIF finals, that team will be playing on Saturday, Dec. 1 at Angel Stadium. Top-seeded in the Southern Division are the defending champion Corona del Mar Sea Kings, followed by Laguna Beach, Grove and Katella.
