GG council could fill vacancy

Garden Grove Journal

One mystery about who will serve on a local city council has been cleared up, but another will have to wait until Tuesday.

In the Westminster City Council election, the Orange County Registrar of Voters Monday certified that Diana Carey had unseated incumbent City Councilman Tyler Diep by the scant margin of 212 votes.

The final official results showed Carey with 8,999 votes and Diep with 8,787.

In Garden Grove, a vacancy created by the elevation of Councilman Bruce Broadwater to the mayor’s spot will be addressed at Tuesday’s meeting of the new city council.  After the swearing in of Broadwater, council incumbent Steve Jones and new councilman Chris Phan, the city leaders will get a chance to fill out their number by appointment.

The city has invited applications from the general public.  Those submitting applications are:

• Donald Arnston;

• Albert Ayala;

• Kris Beard;

• Phat Bui;

• Robin Marcario;

• Trung Nguyen;

• Joe Pak;

• John R. O’Neill

• James Ybarra.

Four of those were candidates for mayor or council in the Nov. 6 election. Beard was appointed to fill a vacancy but he finished behind Jones and Phan in the voting for two seats on the council.

The city council can choose one from that list, or someone else entirely. Sending the matter back to the public for a special election is also an option if the “new” council – Broadwater, Jones, Phan and Dina Nguyen – cannot agree.
