Who will become the fifth member of the Garden Grove City Council?
The new council, including new member Chris Phan, will meet on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers at 11300 Stanford Ave.
After the swearing in of Bruce Broadwater as mayor, Phan and Steve Jones as council members, the council will take up the matter of the vacancy created by the elevation of Broadwater to the mayor’s post.
The council has 60 days to either call a special election or fill the vacancy by appointment. Nine people have submitted applications for the post.
If the council wanted to select the next-highest vote-getter in the Nov. 6 balloting, that would be Phat Bui. That would give the city an historic Vietnamese-American majority on the council.
If experience was the key, the council might choose appointed incumbent Kris Beard, who was edged by Bui in his effort to be elected to the council in his own right.
Candidates are Donald Arnstron, Albert Ayala, Beard, Bui, Robin Marcario, Trung Nguyen, Joe Pak, John R. O’Neill and James Ybarra.

Wow – I’ve grown up in the community back in the ’90s and remembered when it was mostly Caucasian.
Interesting to see it starting to reflect the newly and ever-changing community (I’m Vietnamese by-the-way).
