Quiet opened the meeting of the Garden Grove Unified School District on Tuesday, where new and returning board members were sworn in and organized.
Superintendent Laura Schwalm started with a moment of silence in remembrance for the children and educators killed this past week at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.
Rep, Alan Lowenthal (D-Long Beach), a former college educator, swore in newly elected Bao Nguyen and returning members Dr. George West and Linda Reed.
“I want to say thank you to all my friends and supporters . . . to all the voters, to the community,” said Bao Nguyen, “I look forward to working with every single one of you and building a better community.”
Nguyen was previously appointed to the position when a former member vacated the spot a year and a half ago.
“I hope to be a good steward of our resources for these next four years,” said West.
West was first elected in 2008.
Reed will be celebrating 17 years as a member of the board.
“I’m thrilled to be here and I’m very appreciative of the opportunity,” said Reed.
West was nominated for board president by Reed, seconded by Lan Nguyen and Bob Harden.
Lan Nguyen was nominated by Bao Nguyen and George West for the position of vice president of the board.
Board meetings will continue to meet on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at 10331 Stanford Ave in Garden Grove.
